The Great Western Greenway
A Guide to Walking and Cycling from Westport to Achill
The Wildlife, Flora and History Along the Way
By Iris Galloway
The Great Western Greenway wraps around the rim of Clew Bay on the west coast of County Mayo, Ireland, following in the footsteps of the old railway line between Westport and Achill Island. 43.5 km in length, this is the breathtaking setting for the longest off-road cycle and walking trail in the country.
Hiking or biking, one passes through a pristine backdrop of soaring mountains, glittering sea, foaming rivers, shimmering lakes and open bogland.
At 208 pages, with over 200 colour photographs, this guide covers the history of the railway, stories of the people and towns along the way down through the years, a kilometre-by-kilometre description of the Greenway, and in-depth information about the environment and rich biodiversity to be encountered on your journey.
“Railways have always been a valuable means of forging connections between distant communities, and it is fascinating to retrace the steps our forebears took to open up the West.”
It includes a full-colour map and sections on wildflower and tree identification as well as bicycle hire and repair.
